"When are you going to make a video?"
After years of being asked this question by his students, James Carter has created a 2010 comprehensive and in-depth tutorial on 3 projects. These projects encompass what he considers to be essential and universal metalsmithing skills that are used in all facets of jewelry making. The projects that are clearly demonstrated in a step by step format are: the bezel, the hinge and the clasp. Techniques covered in the video include metal fabrication, soldering, proper use of the jeweler's saw, metal texturing and finishing.
This DVD is packed with a wealth of information gleaned from 35 years of experience in the trade. The 2 disc set is for all skill levels of jewelry artists working in metal who want to improve their abilities and craftsmanship.
Reviews
Having done several workshops with James Carter and knowing what
a wonderful, inspiring teacher he is, I was hoping this DVD would match
that experience. It does! It is beautifully shot, very clear, with wonderful
insights and asides from the cryptic Mr. Carter. Unlike some instructional
videos, it doesn't rely on geeky music or graphics...it's the real deal.
Packed with challenging projects for the experienced metalsmith, it also
includes practical tips that even beginners would benefit from. It's the
humorous and slightly tough-love approach to exacting standards of craftsmanship
that one gets from on-site instruction with James. Congratulations, Jimmy!

I was lucky enough to attend a beginning jewelry class last year
at James Carter Studio and I was completely hooked. I now have a complete
jewelers bench and enough tools for two people. Jimmy is a wonderful teacher
and watching his DVD is just like being in his class. It was informative,
concise, entertaining - all of the things required to keep your interest.
My only question is, when is the next one?
