Short Intensives 

These 3 and 6 hour intensives focus on specific techniques, tools, and concepts.

Sometimes it’s hard to find the time or costly to take a 2 or 3 day class, so we are now offering Saturday specials. The cost is $100 per day. There will be a materials fee which will run between $10-25 depending on how much material is used.

These classes will be fast moving with demos and then hands on. Emphasis will be on 1 or 2 techniques.

 

Intro to Jewelry Making

Ever wondered if you could make jewelry? We are not talking about just stringing beads or PMC but the technical skills needed to fabricate metal jewelry. This class is for beginners who might feel some intimidation with a torch, hammers or just wondering if they have the hand skills needed for this exciting field. Students will work with the following tools: jeweler’s saw, jeweler’s torch, hammers and other shaping tools. An emphasis is on introduction to jewelers tools, not creating a finished piece of work. (By the end of this class you should know if you want to continue learning how to make jewelry.)

Soldering Techniques with Smith Little Torch

This a new one day class. We will become proficient using the versatile Smith Little Torch. Demonstrations and hands on training will cover: flame types, tip sizes and most importantly, how much flame is needed for soldering different size objects. Materials provided.

Commentary from James Carter: In 45 years I have used most torches at one time or another: Prestolite, Hoke and others. For the last 20 years I have used the Smith Little Torch for most of my jewelry applications.


Connections – Hot and Cold

Pre-requisite: None – All levels welcome, but soldering experience required.

This is a one day class jam packed with connections. The first half will be devoted to cold connections: riveting, tube rivets and clasps. The second half will be connections fabricated using a torch. These will include bails, hooks and pin stems. Soldering skills are required for this class.


The Flying Saucer Bead

Prerequisite: Precision drilling and measuring required.

This is a really cool bead that includes the processes of texturing, dapping, riveting and drilling small holes. No soldering is required as this is a completely cold connection process. Textures can be hammered, roller printed or chased onto the surface of the bead. A great class in which to learn good craftsmanship.

Spinning Ring

A very popular ring with bands of different types of metal that spin around it. After the convex shank is formed, bands of different widths, colors or textures are attached. These bands will spin around the ring without sliding off, the biggest challenge in its construction.

The elements and skills learned in this class can easily be utilized in other jewelry forms such as beads. This is a really fun class and one where you can finish a ring in one day.

3 Bezels, 1 Day Class

This is a one day class which will focus exclusively on the bezel. Three shapes will be completed: round, oval and pear. Emphasis will be on craftsmanship and properly setting the stones. Stones will be provided. One will be faceted and 2 will be cabochons.

Tube-set Diamonds

Pre-requisite: Previous jewelry experience required

The coolest thing about diamonds is that they can take the heat. This workshop will show you an ingenious technique: how to mount and set diamonds in a tubular bezel ready to be soldered into your jewelry. We will practice with cubic zirconia. After you have learned this technique, you should be able to mount a diamond in 3-5 minutes.

Keum-boo: Surface Embellishment, 1 Day Class

Keum-boo is a jewelry making technique that comes primarily from Korea. The technique involves the diffusion bonding of gold to the surface of another metal such as silver, iron, steel and copper. The result is the addition of a rich gold color to the metal – an inexpensive way to add gold to your jewelry. We will explore the technique of Keum-boo in one 6 hr. hr. session.
There will be a materials fee of approximately $100, depending on the market price of gold (to be purchased in class).
